Aurelio, meanwhile, has renounced truffle hunting altogether, on the grounds that he doesn’t like the modern world and would like it to go away (the industry, he feels, has been taken over by greed). Sergio, when he’s not digging for fungus, likes to play heavy funk drums. They are a cranky bunch, precisely as idiosyncratic as you’d expect: Carlo is addicted to hunting at night, even as his wife and his ailing body forbid it. On the face of it the title tells you all you need to know – this is a film about a group of elderly Italian men who spend their days – most probably their last days, it’s implied – scouring the forests of Piedmont for rare, white Alba truffles.
